As part of the Hemingway Residence renovation, the roof of the original 1970s garage provided the opportunity to develop a private retreat between the entry point and the main house. A retreat space characterized by natural form, lush vegetation, and privacy.
The space was envisioned with little to no hard lines or right angles, emphasizing organic repetition and the ability to enjoy gardening practices. Similar to other improvements in the property, the garden borrows formal characteristics of the house: ipe wood members, metal accents, rock textures.
The roof top retreat was tasked to be a space free from order, and to evolve organically. The garden relies on a mix of high and low vegetation to enclose and create a space of privacy. It has comfortable area for additional seating or leisure activities, yet the focus point is the hammock-bench. Accompanied by a feature lantern with a water spout pouring over a shallow rocky pond, the singular seating within the enclosed overgrown vegetation invites calm solitude.
