Addressing current rigid regulations that limit housing supply, DOA·S’ competition submission titled ·S’MORE!· simply advocates to get ‘Some More…’, by illustrating the potential to build more on a single parcel without compromising the desired urban built form. The proposal targets the single-lot development with the goal of introducing a diverse-dwelling, outdoor-conscious, multi-storey typology that can fill the gap between typical detached low-density dwellings and bulky six-storey buildings in the city of Vancouver. Prioritizing a minimal environmental footprint, social equity, and community-oriented design, the proposal employs a strategy focused on utilizing cost-effective sustainable building materials & systems; establishing cooperative housing models; and emphasizing the design of high-quality and progressive living spaces that align with evolving societal needs and priorities
S’MORE! leverages its small-scale development to facilitate partnerships with smaller developer(s) and the implementation of cooperative housing models. Small developers are essential to the creation of vibrant and inclusive communities due to their close ties to local communities, allowing them to better address community needs and preferences. This aligns with the goal of adopting the cooperative housing model, which seeks to address housing affordability issues through collective home ownership. Small developers can play a pivotal role in initiating, securing funding, developing, oversee design and construction, and navigating legal complexities associated with cooperative housing projects.
The scheme emphasizes the importance of well-designed exterior open spaces, which offer numerous benefits for residents' quality of life, social interaction, and overall enjoyment of their living environment. These spaces are crucial for improving air quality, promoting outdoor living, and nurturing a sense of community. Investing in quality exterior spaces not only contributes to the long term happiness of residents but also enhances the overall success of the development.
By offering a mix of unit types, urban areas can create vibrant and inclusive communities that cater to the diverse needs of individuals and families of all ages and backgrounds. This diverse range of housing options foster intergenerational living, where people of varying ages and life stages coexist and interact within the same community. A sense of belonging and community pride is then created, as residents come together to share experiences, resources, and support networks. Ultimately, the inclusive approach to urban planning enhances the overall quality of life for residents and community livability.
Using terms like "1 bed," "2 beds," or "3 beds" can limit the type of space we design for a diverse group of people. For instance, the needs of a student in a studio unit differ significantly from those of a couple. Therefore, adopting more descriptive terminology can better cater to the diverse needs of residents. The scheme proposes housing layouts and labels suitable for: Large Family Unit ; Medium Family Unit ; Young Family Unit ; Seniors Unit ; Couple’s Unit ; & Single Adult Unit.
Small projects serve as ideal testing grounds for building systems due to their cost-effectiveness, manageable scale, faster iteration cycles, and reduced risk. Partnering with small developers, who are more flexible and willing to experiment with emerging design and sustainable practices, can enhance the innovation process. Leveraging the advantages of small projects enables stakeholders to accelerate innovation and drive positive change in the construction industry, contributing to a more sustainable and resilient built environment.
In a city grappling with limited space, rising housing demand and population growth, it’s crucial to think outside-of-the-6-storey-box. ·S’MORE!· demonstrates how increased density within a single parcel can be inclusive, appealing, and provide high livability standards when planned effectively.
