Three Yards

'Plex Appeal' Exhibition

Vancouver, BC.

Sep 28, 2024

‘Three Yards’ consists of 6 units within a typical 50 ft by 122 ft Vancouver lot. The building(s) arrangement focuses on providing large areas of shared outdoor spaces throughout the full depth of the site.

‘Three Yards’ shifts the standard front & rear yards, and places them directly to the side of dwelling units. The new yards become shared garden and green outdoor space for residents, with a more private  tone. Consequently, this shift creates a large central shared space, and allows for the introduction of a central building with shared interior amenity space at grade, and a three bedroom unit above.

All units prioritize access to 3 or 4 exterior walls, allowing for comfortable daylight, cross ventilation, and fresh air. All family (2 bed & 3 bed) units include large roof decks overlooking the shared yards and central courtyard.

About this exhibition

Cities across the province are starting to receive building permit applications fitted to their new zoning bylaws. In this time of new possibilities for architecture and design, the Field Collective asked its members to dive into the new rules to discover what unique opportunities for living together they make possible.

Each architectural practice has chosen a municipality and proposed a design that conforms to the new SSMUH rules in that city. Among the design responses you’ll find a wide range of homes suited to all kinds of residents and neighbourhood conditions.
